WORK
OK, well my newly appointed job is gonna kick a$$! Between travel benefits, and an uncapped salary - who is gonna complain about that?! :) Especially when I priced some Sydney apartments to buy and they aren't REAL cheap :s Hmmm, I can wait a bit longer I think...
I start on Monday with my training b/c the shop is still currently being fitted out with all the travel brochures and the PC equipment etc. Unfortunately it means getting to Nth Sydney for the training but the end justifies the means...
I'm gonna be in my element too b/c I got assigned 'in-store music director'! lol
Anyone who knows me knows I LOVE my music! I worked out that I now have over 10,000 songs in my ever expanding collection spanning over 2x 60Gb external hard drives I got when I was in Canada, and then there are the tunes I have ON my laptop.
And Melissa - my new manager & coffee partner - (the other 2 girls don't drink coffee) said I can pimp out the place with music to get the young and fresh vibe flowin'! So I get to pump out my mixes for EVERYONE to hear! WAHOO! :)
Plus, there are the added travel benefits of free trips to Fiji, Samoa, Bali, etc to be won!!!! Yup! I think I can handle that ;-) Did I mention up to 75% discount ON domestic/international travel? OH YEAH!!!! :-D
All in all, I think this is gonna be one really good job. Just need some money to come through so I can put my 'NYEAP' into effect (if you wanna know what NYEAP is you can ask me haha) for the end of the year and then bring on 2006! '06 is gonna kick butt I think. ESPECIALLY NYE! I got big plans for this NYE hehehe Shhh... Dont tell anyone though! It's a seeeeeeeeeeeeecret!! :P

LIFE
Speaking of life (well I wasn't but am now) my younger brother Greg (the less charming, less charismatic, less witty, less funny one of us 3 boys- also the one who got ALL my modesty hahaha) and Vanessa are due to have Jaiden in less than a month now. So that makes 2 nieces and a soon-to-be nephew on the tally board.
I'm surprised there's been no twins yet considering my generation (Dave, Greg, and my 2 cousins) is in line to have them. Maybe I will score the twins with my batch instead lol I'll happily take them b/c I'm pretty sure Greg and Vanessa only wanted one more kid and not 2 anyways. It's funny to think though that everyone thought I would be the first to get married and have kids, yet I am still single lol. Oh well, I got to travel first and experience WAY more than anticipated and that in itself is something I would never give up - the chance to open your eyes and remove the blinkers from seeing around yourself.

Time for change... time for 'milestones'... time for LIVING... (Time to see if I can convince/scare Mum into thinking I'll be married by the end of next year - OK, maybe not the END of next year hahaha)

While my trip turned out (as I keep saying I know) NOTHING like I had planned, I am glad of one thing - the end result. I learnt about me. Who I am, who I want, what I am, what I want, how I came to be where I am today and how I am going to be tomorrow. Then there was the added bonus of a surprise phone call when I got back home and it's been cloud nine since! *clouds* and no I am not going to divulge into that!
Regardless of anything else, after having my eyes opened while overseas and forcing me to know EXACTLY the type of person I need and what I want out of life, all I can say is bring on 2006! I'm ready for it... are you?!

Far-Flung Gift Says It All

From GDS Annual Fund First!:

A telling email followed a nice Annual Fund pledge from Peck family. Barbara, Jeff, Sarah '08 and Haley '10 Peck are living in Hong Kong for the next two years while Jeff is there on business.

If you think that your Annual Fund gift means a lot to your family while they are here at GDS, just look at what happens when you go overseas.

"We are having a great experience, and it is all going very smoothly. The transition to living in Hong Kong was not as big an adjustment as you might think. We are living in a great location, and as English is understood by almost everyone here (it is taught in school for the Chinese children in HK, and most adults, even taxi drivers, can speak and understand enough for us to get by) getting around and finding what you need is more a problem of logistics, than of not being able to communicate. There are also quite a number of expats here where we live, and we are in constant touch because of school, activities, etc. We are finding that the transient nature of the expat community makes those who have been through it eager to be of assistance to those who are just arriving. Also, since friends come and go so quickly here (the average expat stay is about 3 years), everyone is incredibly open to new friendshipsthere is a big, active social life here!

That being said, we also want you to know that we are grateful to GDS for the part it played in preparing our girls to make the most of this experience. It was not easy for them to leave a school that they loved for this new unknown, but they did so with great, open enthusiasm, which I think in some measure comes from their expectation, learned at GDS, that school can and should be a wonderful, nurturing, challenging place.

Academically, they are more than capable of keeping up with the program here at this well-respected international, HIGHLY competitive, Asian school. Lower school will probably be proud to know that Haley is even mostly above grade level in math so far, which I am sure you all must know is saying something here in China! And Sarah, who finds the work here challenging, is more than able to hold her own, and is definitely ahead of the game in English, humanities and history. She says that though she may be working harder, she does not think she is necessarily learning more. An interesting concept, dont you think?

To be fair, the class trips offered by GDS cant compare with school trips to Fiji (where Sarah will be going in March for her class interim trip to live in a tribal community and learn about their way of life, their system of government and how they view the world) or Mongolia or Cambodia, to name but a few. And of course that is part of the reason why we decided to take this opportunity, to have our family experience this part of the world in a way that they might never get a chance to otherwise. But Sarah also adds that, for the most part, her teachers here at are not nearly as wonderful as the ones she loved at GDS...and Haley can not wait to get back to GDS, Middle School, and all of her friends there when the time comes. So thank you for having provided such an excellent educational experience to both of our girls for the past seven years. Our move here has certainly made all of us appreciate GDS even more for being the great school that it is.
